Blizzard has given new life to a classic with Diablo 2: Resurrected

Resurrected brings a significant visual overhaul (with the option to switch back to the original look) and smooths over some of the dated aspects on the technical side of things, but where it matters, this is still very much Diablo II, for the people who were into that the first time.

Diablo II: Resurrected is a love letter to the fans of the original 2000 game. With a stunning graphical overhaul, 4K support, some quality of life improvements, and the addition of a smartly mapped and intuitive controller support, Blizzard has given new life to a classic and it’s playable on PS5. It doesn’t come without its issues, though. There are a variety of bugs, there are still class balance issues, and some of the dungeons are still too tight. Despite these issues, Diablo II: Resurrected is still a very addictive and enjoyable experience that looks incredible and is faithful to the original.

Resurrected brings a significant visual overhaul (with the option to switch back to the original look) and smooths over some of the dated aspects on the technical side of things, but where it matters, this is still very much Diablo II, for the people who were into that the first time. It’s that audience that will benefit most from it.

Inventory space is severely limited compared to other games, and there’s no way to even expand the player’s inventory, other than the Horadric Cube. The player’s stash has been improved, offering ways to trade between characters, but it doesn’t help much in dungeons. Trading items between characters did exist in the original game, but it was more complicated and involved more steps.

One of the most tedious parts about the original was having to pick up gold, and now, you’re able to pick it up just by walking over it. It’s a much-needed improvement that makes gameplay more streamlined. There is also a shared stash so you can move items from one character to another. Music also sounds better, and spell and attack effects have been upgraded. With that said, there were a few things from the original PC version I was missing.

Diablo II Resurrected is a tough one to recommend to newcomers or indeed those who started with Diablo III. Even as someone who dabbled with the original, it can feel unpleasant to play now because of how ambiguous everything is and how punishing it makes even the simplest of tasks.

Diablo 2: Resurrected is a great remake of a real classic. It looks and feels just how I remember it from playing in the early 2000s, but with cooler lighting and sharper graphics. It has a few control issues with when using a controller, but it's still a must-play for anyone who used to play it and misses it, and a strong recommendation to anyone else who likes action RPGs, dark and grim atmospheres, or who just wants to experience a treasure from the now distant past.
